The “Goober Burger” Is Your New Craving

“I just ate a hamburger with peanut butter on it, and it wasn’t some weird pregnancy craving.”

That’s the text message I sent my husband after eating a LurnyD’s Goober Burger for the first time. It wasn’t a weird pregnancy craving, but it sure is a powerful new craving.

LurnyDs-TruckI have been a fan of LurnyD’s burgers since Lauren Davis’s psychedelic kitchen on wheels pretty much launched the food truck scene here in Jackson, about a year and a half ago. I had the privilege of meeting him a month before LurnyD’s began serving up burgers, and it has been fun to keep tabs on his progress.

LurnyD’s burgers aren’t your run-of-the-mill patties with lettuce and tomato. Sure, you can get a regular hamburger if you want, but with toppings like pimento cheese and a fried egg, why would you want to? There is one burger on his menu that has intrigued me from day one: The Goober.

The Goober is seven ounces of ground beef topped with two slices of crispy bacon and a slathering of creamy peanut butter. I learned as I stood there waiting for my burger that if you want it with extra peanut butter, ask for “extra gooey.” (It’s a good idea. Trust me.)

LurnyDs-GooberBurgerAs I raised my burger to my mouth, I mentally prepared my taste buds for what was to come. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect. But as I took that first bite and my senses processed the smoky bacon and then the sweet, creamy peanut butter, my first thought was, “You know what? This works!”

Then, a few seconds later, my husband responded to my text message with a simple question: “Was it any good?”

Yes! It really is. Peanut butter and bacon are really good together! I mean, really good. Serious-craving-good. As the burger cooks, the peanut butter starts to melt and slowly seeps out from under the bun. It’s gooey and messy, so grab extra napkins. But I promise, you will be licking your fingers after every bite. Within a matter of minutes, I had devoured the entire thing.

LurnyDs-menuIf peanut butter isn’t you ideal condiment, Lauren suggests his best seller: The Southwest Burger. It’s topped with pepper jack cheese and homemade pico de gallo. Lauren also has a few wild cards up his sleeve that he likes to throw on the menu for a limited time. He says once pineapple is in season, he plans on adding a burger with a fried pineapple on the top.

It might sound crazy, but if it’s half as good as peanut butter, I’m willing to give it a try. For now, The Goober Burger is Eat Jackson’s pick for Burger of the Month. Check it out and see if it becomes a craving of yours, too.
